Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
